Summary: Home build for a family without shelter living in Tijuana, Mexico
|
The inadequate housing of the neighborhoods in which the corporation is working leads to health hazards year round. Rats, mice, tarantulas, and scorpions invade shacks built directly on top of the dirt. Leaking roofs and patched walls cannot keep the dusty winds of summer and the icy winds and rain of winter from entering the living quarters. Every year make-shift lean-tos collapse in high winds. Respiratory and bronchial ailments abound every winter; babies have frozen to death and fire claims lives every year as a result of poor heating attempts in flimsy shacks. Many residents do not have a latrine and empty human waste on the land.
Project Mercy requires $5600 for all the materials needed to build a basic shelter for a family without shelter in Tijuana Mexico. The Mexican neighborhood identifies the family in greatest need for shelter through communication with Project Mercy. Once funded, the money to build the home is given to Project Mercy to purchase the required materials and implement the process. After the materials are purchased and a date set to build the home, a group of about 20 Rotarians spends sun up to sun down building the simple shelter for the family. By the end of the day, a home is erected and a family previously without shelter has a sturdy, safe home to live in. The home build will be in April 2017.
