Walking Path Project
The need: Walking paths support city, county, and hospital goals of a healthy community, and the need for community exercise, to prevent obesity. Currently, 27% of Gem county is considered obese. The walking path allows access to better health, and will be available to all residents.
Meeting the Need: An effort to make walking paths available in all parts of the community is currently underway. This path is being named for the first hospital established in Emmett, Mary Secor Hospital, and supports the Let's Walk Emmett movement to prevent childhood obesity. This project will allow access to additional, safe walking in the Gem community that is centrally located to the hub of the city, and accessible to many residents within walking distance.
Use of Funds: Funds will be used exclusively on materials for the pathway itself. The work will be completed by the Gem County road crew and a landscape contractor. Total project cost is $5,600. We have already obtained an Idaho Communities Foundation grant for $3,000, with $1,000 from Valor Health, and the remaining $1,600 through grants or donations. Valor Health will provide documentation of the use of the funds.
Timeline: We are currently planning a flexible walking path around the perimeter of the Valor Health hospital park and grounds by August 31, 2017.
Club Member Involvement: The Rotary Club will assist the landscaper with preparing path edges, sweeping gravel, rock removal, grass and weed control on the path during construction. The park area grass and landscaping is maintained by Valor Health staff. Routine maintenance will be completed by hospital staff, residents, and Rotary Club members.
