Rotary Club of Soldotna has a historical strong and continuing presence in two areas of Nicaragua, Masaya and Ciudad Sandino, having built schools and homes there, as well as providing computer networks and other educational equipment.
Stoveteam's information to the PNWPETS attendees was that inefficient open cooking stoves has been that open cook stoves cause as many as 2,000,000 unnecessary maternal and child deaths each year and, by forcing children to spend their day collecting cooking wood, hamper regular school attendance and education.
Rotary Club of Soldotna has ascertained that a Rotary Foundation-established Stoveteam manufacturing facility has recently been established in Esteli, Nicaragua and has negotiated an inexpensive USD $55 per unit purchase price for a truckload of 40 Stoveteam high-efficiency cook stoves manufactured in-country in Nicaragua, and delivered directly to the Ciduad Sandino site where Soldotna Rotary Club is currently actively involved with other education-related activities in partnership with Project H.O.P.E.
One half of the truckload - 20 stoves - would be retained at Ciudad Sandino and provided to the neediest families and the other one-half truckload (20 stoves) forwarded to Masaya to be distributed in conjunction with Masaya Rotary Club and the principal of the Masaya school built by Rotary.
Soldotna Rotarian Chuck Cook is frequently on-site at Masaya and Ciudad Sandino and will manage this project. This project is Rotary Club of Soldotna's second-ranked grant priority.
