Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Salmon, Idaho

Total Budget: $1,000

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Economic and community development

Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: Volunteer Services

Summary: Provide food assistance during weekends to students at risk for food insecurity.

Students that qualify school lunch assistance are frequently at risk for food insecurity. While the school lunch program addresses the food needs while the student is in school, these students are at increased risk to go hungry while out of school over the weekend. Salmon School District 291 has a four-day school week extending the risk of hunger even longer. The Backpack Program provides meals to these students to cover this weekend gap. The program provides approximately 70 sacks of food every week to students in the district. Each sack contains at least 3 quick fix entrees, 2 breakfasts, and around 3 snacks. On long weekends more food is added. Emergency sacks available for any day of the week. The program also provides socks and warm clothing to these students during winter months. $1,000 will buy 1,100 snacks, 240 lunches, and 520 individual breakfasts for the program. The Salmon Rotary Club will assist packing meals and emergency drop boxes periodically throughout the year.
