Not many students in the Anchorage School District actually have their own dictionary. Some do not have access to one outside of school. The ASD has a widely diverse student clientele. Those that "have," find most of their information online... those that "have not," may have to wait until they get to school to look something up that stirs their interest. Anchorage South Rotary started our dictionary project a number of years ago. We hand deliver an expanded dictionary into the hands of every third grade student in the Anchorage School District. 80% of Anchorage South participates in delivering the dictionaries. We have a few members from Anchorage International assist with delivery. We have each student write their name inside their dictionary when we pass them out. We give a little background on Rotary and a letter to the parents goes inside each dictionary explain the origin of the gift and a brief description of Rotary and our goals.
Public Relations: Every student and their teachers gets a short verbal description of Rotary. All dictionaries include a note on Rotary letterhead explaining the gift and a little about Rotary International.
These dictionaries are the only paper books many of these students will every own and call their own.
Our expenses have risen and our resources have shrank... we are looking for some help from the district level to help perpetuate this worthwhile program.
