The Santiago Foundation is a nonprofit community organization that supports two centers, one in Francisco Villa and one in El Naranjo, two small villages outside of Manzanilla, Colima, Mexico. They support both training and education to orphaned and abandoned children, and adults seeking skills to improve employability.
Education is free and available grades one through six, though children or their guardians must supply uniforms, books, school supplies and transportation. For children to succeed, they need further education beyond grade six.
Skill development is equally important. Carpentry, cosmetology, masonry, hairdressing, and cooking are taught. Our Mexican neighbors benefit from their new skills which supplement their income through home-based services or products and/or being able to qualify for jobs in the wider community.
The centers are an important part of the fabric of their communities, providing social and educational support for children and adults alike. The foundations support two buildings, maintenance, various educational programs and materials, 14 teachers, one coordinator and one director. Many programs are taught by volunteers.
The Santiago Foundation was founded in 1983 and is supported by a number of Mexican, US, and Canadian service organizations. It is also run by a former member of our club, Anchorage East.
