Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Economic and community development
Activity Type:
Education: Literacy
Summary: Working collectively with the Nampa Housing Authority, Urban Libraries Council, Kiwanis, Rotaract, and Interact, the Nampa Rotary would like to create nine Free Little Libraries at Nampa Housing Authority sites.
Underserved and low-income populations living in Nampa have transportation or economic barriers making it difficult for them to purchase books or easily access the collection of the Nampa Public Library. Working with the Urban Libraries Council and National Book Foundation's Book Rich Environment initiative, the Nampa Housing Authority, and Nampa Rotary will create Free Little Libraries to at Nampa Housing Authority sites to improve literacy and provide easy access to books to children and teens living in or near Nampa's public housing projects.
District matching funds will enable the Nampa Rotary to fund the Library Kits and posts. Kits will be assembled and painted by members of Nampa Rotary, Rotaract Club at College of Idaho, and Skyview High School Interact Club. Free Little libraries will be installed on Nampa Housing Authority properties by Nampa Rotary Club members and Nampa Housing Authority carpentry staff. Nampa Kiwanis will also be a collaborative partner in the project.
The Urban Library Council provides the Nampa Housing Authority with free books. The Nampa Housing Authority will make sure that the Free Little Libraries are maintained and well stocked with new books.
We would like to deploy the Free Little Libraries by Fall 2017. This project will be sustainable with Nampa Housing Authority's ongoing commitment to provide upkeep of the Little Free Libraries and replenishing the libraries with new books.
Completed
This project is "Completed". This means the project has been implemented and the report was accepted by the district leadership. The project will stay listed on this website as a testimony of the achievements of the project partners.
The Rotary Foundation approved the district block grant on July 17, 2017. Your project is approved. Having more money available to us from The Foundation, the district committee is increasing the DDF for your project. To get the additional money, go into your grant and cancel the signature process (description tab – admin.). Then go to the financing page and edit your financing to reflect $1,900 of DDF. You may reduce your club contribution or keep it the same, making sure your project remains “fully pledged”. Then send again for signatures. Changes will be reviewed by the district before final approval and notification of grant award. If you have questions or need help, please contact Jedd Thomas at (208) 339-1185.

We have built and painted twelve little libraries. We are waiting for them to dry for second coat (if needed). Nampa Housing Authority will be placing the poles in twelve sites and once cement has cured we will install the Little Libraries.
