Siddheswor Aadharbhut school, located in the Ramechhap District of Nepal, was badly damaged by the massive Nepal earthquake on April 25, 2015. The earthquake damaged four rooms in the school. Six students and 8 family members lost their lives in this natural disaster. 27 students lost their fathers during the internal war of Nepal (Maoist Insurgency). There are 119 students from nursery to grade 5 currently studying in a temporary school building and in open space when this building is full or weather permits. Water can enter the temporary school making the structure difficult to maintain. One classroom from the damaged school building is in use but is not adequate. There is an immediate need to reconstruct the walls, roof and floors of 4 classrooms of in the original school. The earthquake and use of the current temporary structure has caused a 12% student dropout. The school will attract more students once reconstructed. During the rainy season the temporary school cannot operate. Reconstruction will immediately solve this issue. This project will reconstruct the classrooms and provide a safe space for learning.
The students and their families are disadvantaged poor and deprived. A total of 79 family members in the village will benefit from the school reconstruction as their children will attend the reconstructed school. The reconstructed school building will also be used by the villagers for cooperative meetings to develop the village products. The reconstructed school will be used as a meeting hall and temporary shelter for natural disasters such as another earthquake. In addition to severe damage to the school, many villagers have lost their homes and are living in temporary shelters. See attached photos. The school is located in the Hattitar Manthali Village in the Ramechhap district which is one of the earthquake affected areas. The Rotary Club of Fort Collins, After Work, completed a school reconstruction in 2016-17 in the Kisine Village, which is also located in the Ramechhap district of Nepal.
The project will require five months to complete once funds are received.
The project will be managed by four Rotaractors including Deepak Achhami, Arun Magar, Santosh Dahal and Jagadish Koirala. They will assist with reconstructing the school and will be in the village to monitor, supervise and help the villagers perform the reconstruction work and purchasing of materials.
Rotarian Sudip Koirala will be supervising and communicating with the Rotaractors. Rotarian Mohan Karki will be assisting Sudip.
Rotarians Bill Emslie and Dave Boon of the Rotary Club of Fort Collins, After Work will communicate with Sudip to ensure the project is well managed and completed successfully. The Rotary Club of Fort Collins, After Work, has successfully completed over 40 projects in Nepal with Sudip as project manager since 2009.
The villagers are happy to provide free labor to reconstruct their school. Rotary After Work and the District 5440 grant will provide funding for construction materials. The Nepal Rotaractors, let by Rotarian Sudip Koirala, will be on site assisting and managing the reconstruction.
According to Sudip, "One very impressive thing is that villagers have not able to make their own home but also they are very excited to work volunteer to make their school for the children. Its heart touching."
