Project Description Country: USA Location: Twin Falls, Idaho Total Budget: $2,400 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: General Summary: Provide dictionaries to all 3rd grade students in Twin Falls School District One of the challenges facing our children today is the ability to learn to research on their own without using devices. Our Rotary club will help with this challenge by presenting dictionaries to students to help them learn to research and improve their literacy through exploration of a dictionary. They will learn to spell words and then to "manually" look them up in a dictionary without the aid of technology. The Rotary Club of Twin Falls will provide dictionaries to all 3rd grade students in the Twin Falls School District. The School District has identified that they are estimating that there will be 780-800 3rd graders in 2017-2018. Our Rotary Club will provide 840 dictionaries to cover all current students plus any students who transfer in over the coming year. The current cost for a case of 24 books is $60 and we estimate that we will need 35 cases of books. We will also need to order stickers for the front cover of the book which designate that the book is a gift from our Rotary club. The stickers will cost approximately $300 for 1000 stickers. Dictionaries will be ordered in September of 2017 and distributed by Twin Falls Rotary Club Members in the fall of 2017. Club members will be involved during a "sticker party" in which the stickers are applied to the books. They will also be involved as teams of 2-3 will visit the 3rd grade classrooms to deliver the books to the students at the 7 elementary schools located in the Twin Falls School District. Your project is approved. Having more money available to us from The Foundation, the district committee is increasing the DDF for your project. To get the additional money, go into your grant and cancel the signature process (description tab – admin.). Then go to the financing page and edit your financing to reflect $1,275 of DDF. You may reduce your club contribution or keep it the same, making sure your project remains “fully pledged”. Then send again for signatures. Changes will be reviewed by the district before final approval and notification of grant award. Dictionaries were given to 3rd graders in 9 public schools and 3 private/charter schools in Twin Falls. David Kirk, a Twin Falls Rotary Club member, chaired the project.
