Summary: Training for the provision of Emergency Medicine and Trauma management in Afghanistan

In 2014-15 the Bonsall and Vista Clubs applied for and received $2,000 DDF (P-634) for the medical education of a high-potential student from Afghanistan. The Afghan Institute gave him medical credentials, but he needed practical application skills in order to become a good doctor.

After his training, Dr. Baha returned to Afghanistan. He leveraged the relationships he built in India and offered free heart-surgeries to over 25 children, most below age 10. The Bonsall, Camp Pendleton and E-Club of United Services cooperated with a Gobal Grant and received $4,000 in DDF to support this project. The lives of 13 children were saved by surgery to correct congenital heart defects. Together, the Global and District Grants (P-1061) involving 4 countries (Australia, India, USA and Afghanistan) and 3 continents. Costs included transportation, housing, and food for the children and their guardians plus hospital facilities and Operating room staff.

Dr. Bahauddin Baha is the eldest son in a family of 7 sisters and 2 brothers, 5 of whom are congenitally half-blind. Because of this he developed a desire to help others in need by becoming a doctor. Due to the wars and the Taliban, he has lived in 11 different locations in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He has worked with OP Mercy, a Swedish NGO as a book promoter in Nangrahar to introduce a culture of reading and critical thinking among Afghan youth. He was also a language and cultural advisor to the expatriate staff of Asian Rural Life Development Organization Afghanistan, and has translated unpublished poetry for the Nangrahar Poetry Project through SIL International to give a voice to the marginalized communities on a national and international level.

He is currently working with the Mobile Surgical Team of International committee of the Red Cross in Afghanistan as a medical field officer. He has observed many deaths because of the war and because of inappropriate management of trauma patients. The ICRC has developed a Mobile surgical team project to help build capacity of local doctors for treating trauma patients.

Dr. Baha wants to further his training in the field of Emergency Medicine and management of Trauma patients by obtaining a Masters In Emergency Medicine from an Indian Institution. This project will finance part of that education.

Camp Pendleton will serve as the project lead. Currently Valley Center and Vista Hi Noon are partners in this project.
