Project Description

Country: USA

Location: San Diego

Total Budget: $6,000

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Activity Type: Health: Disease

Summary: Purchase a portable dental chair to expand preventive services to low income seniors.

The Gary and Mary West Senior Dental Center (SDC) was established to improve oral health in low-income seniors. These seniors have little access to affordable dental care, which in turn leads to an inability to eat and the heart-breaking inability to smile. Located in downtown San Diego, the SDC's unique model embeds a dental clinic within a thriving senior wellness center, which provides meals to over 500 low-income seniors every day. SDC's mission is to deliver affordable, high-quality oral healthcare with comprehensive education, clinical, and wellness services for seniors in need, enabling them to live healthy, independent, and productive lives. The SDC seeks to purchase a portable dental chair, light, and basic cleaning instruments to expand their preventive services inside and outside the dental clinic. With this portable equipment, the SDC's Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) can provide fluoride varnish and other "entry-level" services to seniors attending oral health education classes (pre-requisite to dental treatment) and perform dental cleanings outside of the clinic. This will greatly increase SDC's capacity to see more patients. Grant dollars will be doubled through a match from the Gary and Mary West Foundation (ending 12/31/17), allowing the SDC to complete the purchase for this project.

The overall project budget is $24,272 (which is what was initially entered on this site before modification was made) which would include a portable dental chair and x-ray equipment. The specific portion we are looking at supporting is the portable dental chair along doctor stools, etc., with a total cost of approximately $17,100 (I can provide the actual quote for the chair if needed). The SDC is actually only seeking 50% of that amount because of the Gary & Mary West Foundation is matching any grant dollars through the end of 12/31/17 to help the SDC complete the purchase for this project.

So how would we accomplish the goal of $8,550 (the 50% of total cost since it will be matched)? Here is how to accomplish that project with the assistance of a District Grant:

$3,000 from San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary

$3,000 Matching Grant from District

$2,550 that SDC has already raised and is committing to this project from a crowdfunding campaign called Give65 which was held in July

$8,550 Total

These funds would then be matched again by the Gary & Mary West Foundation. So the entire project would be funded.
