Through the cooperation of the Charleroi Area School District (Charleroi, PA, USA) and the Washington County, Pennsylvania Food Bank (Washington, PA, USA), a program known as Harvest's Bounty provides backpacks of food to underprivileged and low-income children ages 5-13 (grades K-8). More information on the program may be found at http://www.charleroisd.org/harvestsbounty.aspx.
The Charleroi Rotary Club and the Interact Club of Charleroi Area Middle and High Schools have identified that a constant need of both monetary and in-kind donations exists to keep this important program sustainable. The Charleroi Rotary Club has actively partnered with the Charleroi Area School District on various programs sponsored by the school district to support Harvest's Bounty, and a district grant would greatly further this cooperation and support.
The cost of one weekend worth of backpacks for the school district is approximately $890. The Charleroi Rotary Club, in cooperation with the Charleroi Area Interact Clubs, is proposing a grant of $1000 - $500 from the Charleroi Rotary Club with a Foundation Match of $500, to support one weekend of food for the Harvest's Bounty program. Charleroi Rotary Club would work together with the school district to determine the best time to sponsor a weekend of backpacks (or multiple weekends should the ability to do so occur). Ideally, we will sponsor the weekend of Oct. 13-15, 2017, as World Food Day is Monday, Oct. 16. Club and Interact members will then be involved with the packing of the backpacks for the weekend(s) chosen for the Charleroi Rotary sponsorship.
The Charleroi Rotary Club has identified supporting Harvest's Bounty has specifically important for this Rotary Year, as the District 7330 Governor, Steve Arnowtiz, is highly involved with the school district and has his own backpack program ongoing for his Governor year - namely providing underprivileged children with school supplies. Indeed, the Club views this grant application to be a wonderful opportunity to partner with and supplement DG Arnowitz's ongoing program.
