Project Description

Country: Panama

Location: Boquete

Total Budget: $1,500

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, Economic and community development

Activity Type: Health: Disease

Summary: Provide residential solar systems to eliminate the use of kerosene lamps in low income homes

In partnership with Club Rotario de Boquete, fund the purchase of residential solar systems to provide home lighting after dark without the use of kerosene lamps. Numerous low income homes in area do not have electrical service. Many families in the area achieve a cash annual income of less than $2,500 in value. The lack of electricity impacts literacy of student through reduced hours to read. Air quality in the homes burning candles and kerosene lamps impacts maternal and child health especially related to respiratory issues.

Solar system installation will improve the air quality in low income residential homes in the Boquete, Panama area. Asthma and other respiratory ailment reductions for infants and children can be anticipated by reducing the unvented combustion in the homes. The solar systems also offer cellular phone charging functionality which will reduce the amount of family income spent on consumable batteries for phones. This will enable families to utilize phones to improve their family income through improved communications with employers when they don't have to turn off phones to conserve batteries. Improved lighting at night will facilitate improved literacy and overall homework results for the youth. Improved lighting also extends the hours that adults can spend on entrepreneurial activities within their homes to increase their family income.

This project has sponsorship support by the Casper Rotary Club and the local Club Rotario de Boquete in Boquete.
