Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Craig, CO

Total Budget: $6,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: The Craig Rotary club is going to provide all K - 5 students in the MCSD with a bag containing books and games/puzzles.

The summer slide is a big problem in all school districts but has become even more noticable than ever before in the Moffat county school District. According to the MCSD administration students from low income families average losing three - four months of reading proficiency every summer while middle - upper class students gain a month. This creates a four month gap. By the time students are in 6th grade low income students have lost as much as two years of reading proficiency in comperison to their higher income piers. More the 80% of the rich/poor gap occurs during the summer when school is not in session. Yet low income children gain as much reading growth during the school year as middle/upper class children. Numerous studies have shown that providing books to students to read over the summer greatly reduces the summer literacy slide.

We propose to provide all K- 5 students in the Moffat county school district with books at the end of the year. We will have the books along with puzzles/games in a bag with Presented by Craig Rotary on the front. We will do this at assemblies in all four elementry schools during the last week of the school year. This will provide lower income students with books of their own that they would not have otherwise. It will help all students with the summer literacy slide but will have the most effect on students that normally do not have books of their own in their home.
