Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Kalispell

Total Budget: $1,775

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Economic and community development

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: Purchase and install shade cloth over the outdoor ice rink and extend install a roof over the penalty boxes.

The outdoor Woodland Park ice rink is run and operated by volunteers associated with the Flathead Valley Hockey Association (FVHA). The ice rink is located within a Kalispell City Park. The rink is used for hockey and open skating by thousands of children and adults each year. The FVHA recently completed a major upgrade of the refrigeration system to the ice rink that extends time the rink is open during the winter months. However, there are still times when the sun is shining such that portions of the rink's ice become soft. The FVHA identified a solution to prevent soft spots from developing - shade cloth. In addition, the penalty boxes do not yet have a roof.

The funds requested would go to the purchase of the shade cloth, miscellaneous parts to hang the shade cloth, lumber and sheet metal to construct a roof over each penalty box. The funds would also cover the cost to rent a scissor lift to install the shade cloth. The FVHA estimates that installing the shade cloth and adding a roof over the penalty boxes will take 1 full day. Eight members of the Rotary Club of Kalispell will assist the FVHA with the installation of the shade cloth and roof.
