Due to the unreliable rainfall and the dried up dam caused by changing climate it is necessary for the 3,500 residents of the Maasai village - women and children - to walk 16 to 24 miles daily to obtain water for household use, vegetable gardens and livestock. Without water people have begun to sell their land bit by bit; they soon do not have enough to maintain their livelihood and find themselves homeless.
To obtain water, it is necessary to drill a borehole through the granite; this well will provide safe clean drinking water for the 1,500 households and also provide water for their vegetable gardens and livestock. The well will save the residents valuable resources of both time and money. The well will free up time for the women to care fore their families, to engage in income generating income activities, will benefit the children with time to attend school and resources to pay for school fees. The project will allow the Maasai community to maintain its culture, its way of life, its values and its language.
The Seeru family has donated the land land in perpetuity to the community for the community well; this has been done with the assistance from the Rotary Club of Ongata Rongai. Together Jacob abde members of the Rotary Club visited the village and met with the community committee. They and Rotary Club members (locally in District 9212 Kenya and the international partners of 5010 Alaska and 6270 Clubs) will work with the community management committee and its consultants, establish a fee collection system to maintain the well and plant trees in the village to conserve the land and environment.
Jacob are agreed to return to his birthplace village with Rotarians to oversee the construction of the well - from the obtaining competitive bids, geological and environmental survey and permits, the drilling of the borehole and installing the solar water pump system, training and working with the management committee to maintain and sustain the well system and to plant trees. They are interested in using a drip irrigation system.
It is projected that this borehole project would be drilled and completed during 2019 using donations, District and Global Grants.
