Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Anchorage

Total Budget: $1,100

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Activity Type: Water: Supply/Access

Summary: Water bottle fill station provided to high school in Anchorage, Alaska.

Bartlett High School is one of eight comprehensive high schools in Anchorage and has an enrollment of approximately 1,506 students in grades 9 through 12. Bartlett is the Anchorage high school that our club has chosen to support over the years, primarily through our scholarship program.

The school currently has an existing, older, traditional water fountain in their gymnasium that is not well used, often due to low water pressure and possibly because of a perception that water fountains can be unsanitary--a common attitude, as described by Kendra Pierre - Louis, in a Washington Post article titled "We don't trust drinking fountains anymore, and that's bad for our health". With low motivation to use the water fountain, students may choose to purchase less healthy beverages, drink water from single use water bottles or forgoing hydrating all together. A water fill station at the heavily used Bartlett gymnasium would give students a healthy and convenient drinking option and may lead to a reduction in waste created by disposable water/beverage bottles. The intention is that this water fill station would provide a convenient, expedient, and sanitary way for both students and student athletes to fill re-usable and previous used beverage containers. The project is slated to be finished by September of 2018. The total cost for this project is $1,100.00 and the matching grant will be used towards the purchase of the water fountain and a donor plaque. Club members will be involved in the presentation of the fountain to the school.
