Project Description

Country: Nepal

Location: Bamti Bhandar Village

Total Budget: $4,560

Area of Focus: Water and sanitation

Activity Type: Community Development: Disaster Recovery

Summary: Reconstruct a boys and girls toilet in a community school damaged by the 2015 earthquake.

This Community English School was established in 2013 by the villagers to provide learning opportunities for their children in an English language setting. This is a community-based school and the villagers are paying the salaries of teachers by raising the money themselves. In 2015, when the earthquake devastated much of Nepal, all the physical structure of the school, including toilets, was destroyed. This created a significant problem for the village and in 2016 they rebuilt the school by collecting money among themselves, but they did not raise sufficient funds to complete reconstruction of the collapsed toilets.

The school is functioning but does not have toilets. This is creating problems for the students to attend the school. They are passing urine and stool on the open space, creating environmental as well as health problems for all students. The girls are dropping from the school due to lack of toilets. The school has 63 students up through grade 4.

This project will be managed by Rotarian Sudip Koirala, Present Elect Nominee of the Rotary Club of Rudramati, Kathmandu in Rotary International District 3292, Nepal and Bhutan. Our Rotary Club of Fort Collins, After Work, has worked with Sudip since 2009 and have successfully completed over 40 projects with Sudip in Nepal. Sudip is very conscientious and always completes these projects. This project, selected by Sudip, will restore a boys and girls toilet destroyed in the devastating 2015 earthquake. We feel this is a very worthwhile project because it will improve sanitary conditions in and around the school.
