Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Pocatello

Total Budget: $12,000

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: Replace unsafe workshop heater and cooler at New Day Products & Resources sheltered employment agency Pocatello

2018-2019 Pocatello Centennial Rotary Club Project:

To replace the defective, unsafe, and ineffective heating and cooling system at New Day Products and Resources production facility in Pocatello. http://www.newdayproducts.org/wp/

New Day provides training and sheltered (in house, closely supervised) or supported (monitored and coached) employment for disabled people. New Day is a private, non-profit agency with 35 employees serving 100 clients. At the facility people with disabilities detail cars, make wood products, print t-shirts, launder rags used to clean rest area bathrooms and other jobs.

New Day is an agency of ACCSES Idaho. http://accses-idaho.org/ that operates under the state use law. A video on the about us page further illustrates community rehabilitation service.

New Day has been in the facility over 40 years. Photos show existing conditions. The detailing shop heating system has been designated by OSHA inspection to be hazardous. Temporary portable heaters take chill off work areas now. The facility has some old and inefficient room air conditioners.

Vendors have provided five HVAC equipment solutions. Evaluation is that installation of a central HVAC system with ducting will provide many years of safe, comfortable, economical working conditions. The proposed unit is a gas fueled heater, 105,000 BTU with 4 ton cooling unit in a roof-top enclosure with ducting connections. We have received two quotes for equipment and installation. Work can proceed when funds are available taking about 3 weeks to complete.

The project budget is:

Cost:

Lennox KGB060S4DY P, Gas/Electric, Packaged Rooftop Heating-Cooling Unit $12,000

This is complete installation, wiring, gas piping, controls, duct work, finish carpentry, etc., with one year parts/labor warranty

A second quote was obtained with less advantageous terms and conditions.

Funding:

Pocatello Centennial Rotary Club $7,000

District 5400 match $5,000

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

Rotarian Involvement in Project: Rotarians became aware of the New Day HVAC system after a presentation to the Pocatello Centennial Rotary Club and a tour of the facilities. Rotarians use the services and products made by disabled people working at the New Day facility so have first-hand awareness of the impact of problematic heat in the winter and cooling in the summer. A Centennial Rotarian with technical expertise provided a repair-replace review. A Rotarian from another Pocatello Rotary Club is in the HVAC business. His review resulted in a replace recommendation with two options and discounted quote for materials and labor. A comparison quote was a higher number. Pocatello Centennial Rotary Club pledged funds for the replace option. These club members raise funds for this and other projects by selling beverages at community semi-pro baseball games. Essentially all Centennial Rotarians are involved in the fundraising activity. While selling beverages, Rotarians have further informed the public of the project and of Rotary involvement resulting in additional donations via the 'tip jar.'

The eligibility guidelines for Rotary Foundation grants state that all Foundation grant activities must include the active participation of Rotarians. Please help us understand the extent of Rotarian involvement in this project by describing it in the addendum section of your project page. TRF approved the district block grant on 7/14/18. The district received more requests for DDF than money available requiring that cuts be made in funding. Your project has been reduced to $3,750 of DDF. Clubs in tier 3 are expected to make up the difference in the project financing. We have cancelled the signature process and adjusted the financing to reflect this. To confirm your intention to continue with the project, please send it again for signatures on the admin side of the description tab. Questions? Need help? Contact District Grants Chair Ines Crespo, 208 320-8494 or DRFC Marianne Barker, 208 308-5617.
