PROJECT GOALS:
- PROVIDE A SAFE AND ENGAGING PEACE-FOCUSED WINTER FESTIVAL ENVIRONMENT FOR CHALLENGER MS STUDENTS & NEIGHBORHOOD CHILDREN.
- CULTIVATE FRIENDSHIPS WITH, AND DEEPEN ROTARY RELATIONSHIPS WITH, CHALLENGER INTERACT FAMILIES, ESPECIALLY 1ST GENERATION REFUGEE FAMILIES.
- ACTIVELY RAISE AWARENESS IN THIS CHALLENGER MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY TO THE POSITIVE IMPACTS OF PEACE LITERACY AND THE IMPACT ROTARY IS HAVING IN THIS ARENA - BOTH IN THEIR COMMUNITY NOW AND ALSO IN COMMUNITIES THEY HAVE HAD TO LEAVE BEHIND.
The Sun City Rotary Club plans to take another step in expanding and deepening both our international footprint and our relationship with the families of Interactors and other students at Challenger Middle school - recognizing that many of these families are first generation immigrants from very troubled regions of the world. (We also recognize that a number of these parents are very likely to include business people who understand community service and may benefit from local Rotary connections. In addition, these people intimately understand conditions in their homelands which could potentially benefit from Sun City Rotary assistance. We seek to engage them to discover new ideas in International Service.)
This Community In-Reach Winter Peace Festival will be put on by Rotarians, the Glendale Police Dept and PTSA members on school grounds in cooperation with Challenger Middle School Staff and the Glendale Unified School District and will be open to all Challenger families. Based on the enthusiastic family/community participation in previous Challenger Winter Festivals, we anticipate a participation of 1,000 to 1,500 people.
The festivities include up to two dozen games and activities, plus food, drink and candy and Santa. Challenger Interact will again man an End Polio Now booth, where they will attempt to beat their total of 250 purple pinkies last year. Sun City Rotarians are committed to donation of at least $0.50/pinkie to End Polio Now in the name of Challenger Interact. In addition, Sun City Rotary, in cooperation with the Glendale PD, will create a interactive booth and display to highlight peace impacts through Rotary's Areas of Focus, plus some current Rotary peace projects being conducted in "Countries of Origin" for many of the Challenger families, further connecting them with Rotary and the impact we have around the world.
Games will be homemade yard games, such as beanbag toss, Angry Birds, lawn bowling, corn hole, plinko and ring toss. Most of these games are provided by Sun City Rotarians - many then donated to Challenger MS.
