The Fountain Valley School District has a clear focus on building literacy throughout the community. For the last 30 months, they have been creating leveled libraries in each of the K-5 classrooms at the District's seven elementary schools. This type of investment in both instruction and in books is significant, and requires support from community service groups. The Rotary Club of Fountain Valley would like to support these efforts in literacy by providing a grant to the District to purchase books, leveled readers, for classroom libraries.
November 2018 - March 2019
Rotarians will be actively involved in two ways. One of the ways will be in the actual distribution of books to classrooms. Being able to speak to teachers and students regarding our mission to support literacy is essential. In addition, FV Rotary Club Members will participate in Read Across America on March 1, 2019.
The direct beneficiaries are the students, teachers and schools. However, an educated community is a thriving community, which is something that we will all benefit from in the coming years. Our service will be directly in support of Fountain Valley School District's goals regarding literacy and our participation in Read Across America will provide direct evidence that our community supports our students, not just with funding, but also with acts of service.
The project is sustainable, as the school district has a four-year strategic plan for improving literacy in our schools and in our community. The FV Rotary Club would like to be a part of that plan for the upcoming year, as well as future years.
Funds will be provided to the District, who will work with teachers to select the "right" books for the students. The District will provide invoices to FV Rotary Club, demonstrating how the funds were used.
Additional Comments:
It is widely accepted that literacy, the ability to read and write, is critical to economic development, as well as individual and community well-being. In fact, numerous published studies argue that students who do not read at grade level by the end of third grade are more likely to dropout from high school and engage in anti-social behaviors. To support the efforts of building literacy in our community, the FV Rotary Club would like to provide additional resources to the students and teachers in Fountain Valley School District, as we are convinced that this is a strong investment in the education of our students, as well as our future, which benefits us all!
