Appalachian Service Project is a volunteer organization that works on houses in the Appalachian region of the US. This area includes parts of Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina. These areas have a high poverty rate, partly due to the decline of coal mining in the region. ASP is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Katonah ASP is a local chapter of the organization. They have been in existence for over 25 years, meeting at and sponsored by the United Methodist Church of Katonah. This year the Katonah ASP is taking 47 teenagers and 21 adults to town of Appalachia, Wise County, Virginia. They will be working on 10 different houses in dire need of repairs (see attached picture from 2016 trip by the same group).
