Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Arlington, TX

Total Budget: $1,800

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: General

Summary: Providing food to low-income elementary students

As a Title 1 school, at least 40% of Speer Elementary's student population are classified as low-income. Students can usually receive breakfast and lunch through government meal programs, but they don't have that option during the weekends. The school had a program to put non-perishable food items in backpacks and send them off to the students for the weekends. Unfortunately, they lost their funding for the next school year. Our club would like to continue this program for at least a semester. There are 60 to 70 kids who would need backpacks every week and we'll have about $72 per week to purchase the items. The school will provide the backpacks and assemble the packs every week. Our club will just have to purchase and deliver the food to the school every week.
