Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Kemmerer, WY

Total Budget: $1,500

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: This two-part literacy project will purchase book sets for high school teachers to use in Lit Circles and classrooms and will fund a parent-child reading night for the local preschool.

The Kemmerer Rotary Club views literacy as an initiative that is crucial for student success from the developmental preschool years all the way through high school graduation. This two-part grant request meets needs that have been identified by both preschool and secondary school educators. Of the proposed $1,500 project budget, $1,000 is designated for the purchase of approximately 10 sets of 10 to 25 copies of the same title for high school teachers to use in Lit Circles (daily reading groups) and in their classrooms. The books sets will be ordered, housed and circulated by the Lincoln County Library thereby making the sets available to check out to teachers as well as to adult community reading discussion groups. Titles will be chosen in collaboration with the high school teachers. The remaining $500 is designated for the Kemmerer Child Development Center (KCDC), a publicly-funded preschool, to use for a literacy event in which parents will come to the Center and read to their children. Approximately $375 of the $500 will purchase 75 books--one for each preschooler to take home--and the remaining $125 will go toward providing a meal for this largely low-income population. Library staff indicates that they can implement the book set purchases immediately and have the sets available to the high school within a month of receipt of grant money. KCDC plans to hold their literacy event in late November or early December, 2018. Rotary will design and print bookplates that acknowledge the role of the Kemmerer Rotary Club, and bookplates will be placed in each book. Rotarians will publicize the availability of the book sets and the preschool literacy event and will assist with the event as needed.
