Please note that Gamru Village School is a registered charity in India (#182450068), and has an FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) account. An FCRA account is required by TRF and the Indian government to transfer funds to India. TRF has approved District Grants in India provided the recipient of the District Grant has an FCRA account.
The Gamru Village School provides free education to poor, underserved children in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India. This school was started in 2004 to serve the children of the local poor community and the children of the migrant laborers. Many of these families cannot afford to send their children to the government schools because although the schools are free, there are still some fees, and families would have to buy books and uniforms which they cannot afford. There is no cost to attend Gamru Village School. Only the children from the poorest families are accepted at the school.
The school currently serves 145 children, has 9 teachers and 2 staff. The school survives from donations from local and international sponsors. The Rotary Club of Del Mar has supported this school through previous grants. A Matching Grant project was done in 2009 to give a great boost to the school by supplying key equipment and support including kitchen equipment, bookcases, uniforms, books, school supplies, computers, water filtration system, etc. District Grants were made in 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19. See Matching Grant project D-1311 and District Grants P-1408, P-1840 and P-2376.
The school needs new furniture for kindergarten classes and sweaters for 100 students. Any funds in excess of these purchases will be used to cover operating expenses. This grant provides for these needs at cost of 100,000-175,000 INR or approx. US$2,000.
We will be working locally with the Rotarians from The Dharamsala Rotary Club in District 3070. District 5340 and the Rotary Club of Dharamsala have had a close working relationship over many years.
