There is a tremendous need, especially for high-risk youth in the Kibbra low-income neighborhood, for programs that provide activities and support for children during the after school hours and throughout the year.
Children and teens in Kibera are struggling for direction and positive opportunities are needed to keep them safe and on-track; a great majority of fourth graders cannot read nor do math at grade. In addition, 10-18 year olds who are left alone after school are prone to greater use of cigarettes, marijuana, and alcohol than those in adult-supervised settings.
This is an ongoing project that requires the foundation to engage the children by providing
• Homework assistance through tutoring, mentoring and use of computer labs
• Nutrition education and putting in place a feeding program since most of these kids live on one meal a day
• Train Life skills which are integrated throughout all phases of the program
• Use of sports such as Football,Volleyball,Tennis and Netball instruction where participants engage in fun physical fitness, enjoy the camaraderie of playing in a team s format with friends and peers, and learn to become responsible adolescents and adults.
The funds will be utilized to purchase sporting equipment, put in place a Feed the kids program and be able to pay teachers to support the initiatives above.
The Rotary Club of Escondindo-CA USA and the Rotary Club of Lavington in Nairobi,Kenya will oversee the program to full implementation.
