Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Fairbanks, AK

Total Budget: $6,750

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Disaster Recovery

Summary: Raise funds to assist families (food, job search, networking) that are still recovering from the business fallout of COVID-19

We will reach out and identify families in Fairbanks who are struggling after losing their primary job and now face a future with less resources to feed and care for their family. The project will mainly get its message to the community through social media and public service announcements asking individuals in need to contact us to set up an interview so that we can develop a plan to help them. The timeline will begin this fall as family expenses rise with the oncoming winter and the need to provide heat and food for their families. Club members will be involved in finding families to help, interviewing, and determining a plan that fits that person/family. Funds raised will go to a variety of things, but mostly food, fuel (heat) & job search assistance.

Board meeting decision made today to request $100 from each member towards our fundraising goals. This would go out in the first quarter's billing statements. This is a voluntary request, not a raise in dues.

by John Lohrke

Spoke with Brad today and asked if our Youth Exchange fundraising money from our first quarter billing could be used to satisfy the fundraising necessary under the Grants program. He said yes which is a huge help because of our current difficulties with gathering crowds for fundraising. In light of this, he urged our Club to try and wrap up our grant requirements by the end of the Rotary year (June).

Explained at board meeting today my conversation with Brad Gamble re: the use of our youth exchange funds and how they can be used (since the Youth Exchange program is postposed for the 20/21 Rotary year) to satisfy the fundraising necessary for our grants program.

Board meeting today involved discussion about our progress with our grant recipients: the Soup Kitchen and Rescue Mission. Mamie will follow up with Hannah at the SK and Will will do the same with Pete Kelly from the RM.

met with Will and Krystel Marino at the Rescue Mission this morning. Krystel will ask Exec Director Pete Kelly later today the names of the four ($750 each) grant recipients.

12-May-21

by John Lohrke

Received letter from Rescue Mission giving us the names of the four grant recipients: David, Caitlin, Ryan and Darren. The letter (uploaded) explains how the funds will help them get back on their feet after a difficult year.

Mamie exchanged emails with Shauna Brees at Literacy Council to request names of those that are using the Food Kitchen that could use our help. Should have the names shortly so that we can provide the funding to help.

by John Lohrke

A check for $3,000 was given to the Rescue Mission today for the recipients named last month. A total of four different families received help with our donation. We will proceed to finish the giving by following through with our discussions and collaboration with the Literacy Council (Soup Kitchen).

Spoke with Hannah Hill at the Soup Kitchen and she explained the different help that the Literacy Council School Age Kids program serves and the Soup Kitchen which is primarily for adults. We can give to both and help two programs! The need has been greater in the last 15 months because of COVID creating longer lines at the Bread Line and increasing needs of children.

Presented checks to today to Donna Schultze, Admin Director for the Literacy Council $1,500. She works with Shauna Brees and the Kids Schoolage Programs; and Hannah Hill from the Stone Soup Kitchen $1,685, who helps feed the needy, mostly adults who are growing in numbers since the pandemic began over one year ago.
