This is submitted as a Governor's Grant application to support a children's summer breakfast program sponsored by the FoCo Cafe in Fort Collins.
FoCo Cafe's mission is to build community by providing nutritious and delicious meals to the people of Fort Collins regardless of their ability to pay while using mostly local, organic, and sustainably grown ingredients.
FoCo Cafe is the first nonprofit restaurant in Fort Collins. Cafe patrons set the price for cafe cuisine in this pay-what-you-can setting. Instead of a cash register, a donation box is on the counter. If you can give more, please pay it forward.
The FOCO Café will offer their Kids Feeding Kids Summer Family Breakfast Program from July 1 to August 14, 2020. The 2020 program will take place each Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 - 10:30 am at the FoCo Café in Fort Collins. Rotary members will volunteer to help deliver the program.
Background
Studies show that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, especially for children. Eating breakfast improves children's educational performance, behavior and health. During the summer, food security becomes a greater challenge for many families because schools do not provide free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs.
FoCo Cafe's Summer Breakfast Program provides families and children with healthy breakfast throughout the summer. Children and their families also participate in community through educational activities.
2019 was the FoCo Cafe's fourth year of the Kids Feeding Kids Breakfast Program. Participants enjoyed healthy breakfasts sponsored by Noosa, Ginger and Baker, Silver Grill Cafe, Rainbow Restaurant, The Waffle Lab, Friendly Critter Farms, and Revolution Pops. FoCo was able to serve 547 meals to 38 families and 89 kids in the community. The program also provided volunteer opportunities to 57 community members and engaged participants in 25 hands-on, educational activities. Through these activities, participants learned about yoga, farm animals, insects, gardening, various crafting and creating skills, music, and more.
Project budget is $3,000 with $800 requested from DDF through a Governor's Grant and $2,200 from Fort Collins Rotary After Work and others. Please see project budget attached in Documents section.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
Paragraph 4 states that "Rotarian's will help deliver the program" The meaning of this is that Rotarians in the After Work Club will be asked to sign up for shifts that will involve serving food and helping with activities for the children. Sign up slots are not yet available on line but will be in the near future.
