Curriculum in schools dont have elements of Ethics and Peace that are integral to the life and careers of the Youth. Rotary has this in built in its 4 way test and it has been effectively used to build these values thru Interact and Rotaract. The Long Beach Rotary incorporated this into a middle school program called Teaching Ethics to Kids (TEK). Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
This project had to undergo modifications due to the COVID restrictions. Besides the online workshops, we also held an essay contest for students in High Schools who were part of a program for low income / underserved called AVID coordinated by the Orange County Department of Education. Essay contest was judged by a panel of Rotarians and winning essays were provided an award grant for college. See the final report for details.
Although the Ethics and Peace project was completed to accomplish the objective, the funding pattern had to be redirected to comply with grant guidelines. Consequently the DDF contribution was matched by the club to complete a supplemental project to provide 'Welcome Home' baskets to residents in transitional housing through Mercy House, a provider of shelters in Orange County. This modification of use of funds was approved.
