Location: San Diego

Total Budget: $1,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Partner with the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation to create a virtual mentoring/ academic program and participate in environmental/community restoration projects.

San Diego Rotaract looks to partner with the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation (https://www.jacobscenter.org/) on a long-term partnership to support the low income and URM community of the diamond district and strengthen the club's regional community ties. San Diego Rotaract voted on our involvement and investment in the Diamond neighborhood and is pursuing a partnership with the Jacobs Center as a result of the demographic and economic composition of the region highlighted in the Jacobs Center's Collective Impact Report (https://issuu.com/jacobscenter/docs/diamond_district_collective_impact_) and the immediate COVID-19 needs that were brought to the attention of the club by one of our members.

This partnership includes club support and collaboration in person and virtually over the course of the year in the following projects subject to the ongoing public health safety measures enacted by officials.

The establishment of a virtual mentoring and academic advising program with students and parents.

Environmental and community restoration projects including but not limited to Chollas Creek trash cleanups, vegetation pruning and trimming, and graffiti removal.

COVID-19 response support including:

The administration of PPE to businesses and community members purchased by the Jacobs Center from contributions including San Diego Rotaract.

Food distribution at weekly IAMBK 2020 FRESH FOOD DRIVE (https://www.iambkcdc.org/iambk-food-registration.html) at the Jacobs Center.

Administration of a COVID-19 impact survey to members in the community

Community engagement efforts including participation at the virtual "Be about it" event in May, club applicants to the vacant Board position at the Jacobs Center, among other opportunities.

San Diego Rotaract is seeking $500.00 in matching grants for a total budget of $1,000.00 towards this project. The money will go towards 3 annual Zoom Pro licenses (~$450), annual Calendly Pro license (~$140), activity kits (~$160), supplies for environmental and community restoration ($150), and donation to Jacobs Center Covid-19 response (~$100).

All 10 active members will participate as either mentors and/or academic advisors as well as participate in trash cleanups, and beautification projects. We are currently reaching out to other Rotaract and Rotary clubs in the area to welcome them to participate in our project.

We began our career panel mentorship with KIPP. We are doing bimonthly virtual meetings introducing different career opportunities to middle school age students. We have also created our student success fund with the $1000 we received for this project. We will be financing bus passes up to $500 to help kids attend school in person. The other $500 will be set aside for the students to apply on a first come first serve basis to fund different items they need. The students will write a brief paragraph describing what they need the funds for and the San Diego Rotaract will vote on the approval of the item. At this moment no students have applied for these funds however we have already given the money to KIPP to allow quicker distributions of funds once their request is approved.
