This year, 2020, marks the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Yonkers Rotary Club. Our Club proposes a special project to commemorate this august occasion and to promote Rotary. The project will create a special place where people can come to relax and remember those who have contributed to the improvement of our city and be inspired by their volunteer spirit. The project will consist of installing two groves (one in east Yonkers and one in west Yonkers) of special decorative trees that will attract visitors - like Yoshino and Kwanzan cherry blossom trees. Our Club will work with City of Yonkers Parks Department - with whom we worked recently to refurbish a basketball court at Barton Park - to select the two locations. Each grove will involve purchasing and installing 20 trees, a park bench, a plaque honoring Rotary and our Club and name plates on the bench honoring our deceased club members.
Similar to our successful project at Barton Park, our Club will purchase and donate the trees, benches and plaques and provide them to the City for installation and ongoing maintenance. The 6' trees will cost $100/each, the park benches will cost $500/each and the Club /Rotary plaques will cost $500/each. The total cost will be $6,000.
Our Club, through our Foundation, pledges $2,500. We request a District grant of $2,500. In addition, Club members will donate the name plaques on the park bench in honor of deceased Club members.
