History Logs

Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Soldotna

Total Budget: $600

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Graduating sixth graders planting 300 trees in Soldotna.

Caring for the Kenai (CFK) was introduced to the Kenai Peninsula School District (KPBSD) as a unique environmental education program. The program continues winning national awards as students use creative thinking for opportunities to find useful solutions to environmental challenges on the Peninsula. A Soldotna sophomore approached our rotary club about collaborating with her on a CFK project which pertained to having 6th graders plant approximately 300 trees. Rotary would partner with her, CFK, City of Soldotna and KPSBD. The trees would be planted in proximity to the respective schools by the students, staff, and members of Rotary. The city of Soldotna would remove the existing dead trees and water the new seedlings. Rotary would purchase the trees and provide planting expertise.

The trees will provide an environmental, educational and habitat.

• Environmental Benefits of Planting Trees. Trees are like the lungs of the planet. They breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen.

• Provide habitat for birds and other wildlife.

• Families will learn how to plant trees, watch them grow and learn about the many other benefits of the trees.

The trees would be purchased through the Cook Inlet Chapter of American Society of Foresters at $2 a tree (300 trees) for a total budget of $600.00. The project would be complete by September 2021.
