Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Prescott & Yavapai Co, AZ

Total Budget: $12,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: The Prescott Area Imagination Library provides monthly books mailed to enrolled children ages 0-5.

The Prescott Area Imagination Library (PAIL) is a joint district grant application being submitted by the Rotary Clubs of 1. Prescott, 2. Prescott-Frontier and 3. Prescott Sunup. PAIL is the local application of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Program. This program provides age-appropriate books mailed monthly to children in Prescott, AZ aged 0-5 that have been enrolled by their parents.

Needs: The underlying need addressed by this program is the improvement of general literacy and communication skills of young children. By engaging in this program, young children will improve their readiness for formal schooling. The program also indicates expectations on the part of parents and caregivers in presenting and interacting with children about the books. Parents talking and reading with their infants, toddlers and preschoolers every day is critical for healthy brain development and long-term learning.

To date the program has been available to children within the city of Prescott proper. It is anticipated that for 2021-2022 and beyond, that PAIL will be expanded to additional communities in Yavapai County.

Timeline: PAIL is an ongoing program entering its third year of operation and support by the three Prescott Rotary clubs. To date the program has been administered locally by the "Friends of the Prescott Public Library" in colaboration with the Dolly Parton Foundation, which provides the infrastructure for securing the books and mailing them to children. The several PAIL stakeholders are currently in the process of forming a separate non-profit corporation for the local administration of the Imagination Library program. At the time of writing this grant application, the group has had its "Articles of Incorporation" approved by the Arizona Corporation Commission. Their application to the IRS to be recognized as a 501-C-3 non-profit charity corporation is pending.

Funding: During its initial two years, PAIL's major funding source has been through D-5495 district grants and club matching funds. Private donations are also accepted. The PAIL organization also solicits and receives grant funding from the Arizona/Yavapai County Community Foundation.

Rotarian Involvement: The project is directly supported by the fundraising efforts of the respective members of the three Prescott Rotary clubs.

I'm so sorry for the inconvenience, but (though the "block" district grant has been approved) The Rotary Foundation has not yet released the funds. It's frustrating when things like this are out of our hands, but we hope to be sending money to the clubs very soon. Thanks for your patience.
