Summary: Bring a garden and water safety program to RH Dana Elementary School.
Many students in South Orange County, particularly at RH Dana Elementary, don't know how to swim. Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children age 1-14. The Josh the Otter Program was started by a Rotarian who lost his child to drowning. We propose bringing the Josh the Otter program to RH Dana. The packets for Rotarians include the Josh the Baby Otter book, a sticker on water safety, and a coloring book. The students and their families will benefit from the program through classroom programs and a a "Day at the Beach" where Rotarians, together with lifeguards, will introduce lead the students into the water with parents. More information is available at www.Joshtheotter.org.
The school also needs a community garden to teach students about the importance of natural foods. Students will be able to work in the garden throughout the year.
