We are requesting funding to provide child education to a group of 75 children of migrant workers impacted by CovID-19, as their parents (breadwinners) have been quarantined and schools closed and in need of basic reading, math and digital instruction to prepare for educational success. The funds will be used to purchase licenses for the Learning Upgrade program (2019 X-Prize Winners for Literacy) for each child at a cost of $40 per person per year. RB will provide $1,500 in pledged funding and request matching DDF funds for the remaining $1,500, for a total budget of $3,000. Payment for the project will only be required when we sign up eligible families. So, this request is a "not to exceed" amount.
The virtual training will provide specific resources to disadvantaged migrant field worker families in Calexico School District. Calexico School District and the Migrant Director of Imperial County Office of Education (ICOE) supports the project. Students will use their own smartphones to complete the lessons anywhere and anytime and the Rotary staff/School District will be able to monitor in real-time each student's progress using a web-based dashboard, including detailed assessment reports and time-on-task. Every student session is logged with a time stamp, device used and lesson completed. This high level of accountability will help us ensure that the licenses purchased make an impact to transform the lives of the students. Maximum project time will be six months and Rotary Clubs Rancho Bernardo (Grant Lead), Brawley and Calexico plus other Imperial Valley clubs may be involved. The School District, ICOE and Rotarians will identify the children in need, plus will assist virtually in training and mentoring them.
