Project Description

Country: USA

Location: McCook, NE

Total Budget: $1,244

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Provide scholarships/funding and assistance to children taking youth classes at McCook Community College.

Each year, McCook Community College holds several children's classes for area youth throughout the year. The classes are offered to children grades Kindergarten through the eighth grade. Classes offered include art, theater, entrepreneurial, safety, and science courses.

This year's children's courses begin in July with a six-day theater camp, culminating with two theater productions of James and the Giant Peach, Jr., two four-day Art Fundamental Camps ending with an art show exhibiting the young artists work, a three-day STEM Robotics class, a fire safety course, and a young entrepreneurs Lemonade Day.

This grant is for a total of $1,244: $995 of district funds and $249 from the local McCook Rotary Club. Registration costs for the camps run from Free of Charge (fire safety and Lemonade Day) up to $45. The McCook Rotary Club is offering to pay $15 for the first 68 youth registrations for a chargeable course ($1020). The grant is designed to ease the registration cost of the parent, which may allow the student to attend more than one course if they choose. It will also allow students the opportunity to learn something new, have fun, and be creative, which will assist with their learning process as they grow. Rotarians will also be providing camp t-shirts for the Theater students, at a cost of $224. In addition, we estimate at least 25 hours of support will be shown by Rotary members who will attend the courses to (1) show their support, (2) meet/greet the students, (3) assist the teacher if needed, and (4) serve snacks/water at each class.

Any left-over registration fee's will be put toward the registration costs of youth programming during the fall/winter/spring months until all 68 youth have been served.
