Maximizing Library Use

History Logs

Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Fort Worth

Total Budget: $6,716

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Fort Worth

Our club has an ongoing partnership with Richard J. Wilson Elementary, a Title One, multilingual school that is part of FWISD. Approximately 95% of the students are economically disadvantaged. Over the years, our club has purchased technology, classroom equipment, and supplies based on priority needs identified by the school's administration. We distribute dictionaries to the third graders and offer student recognition events six times a year called Rotary Club Star Student Celebrations. The Celebrations culminate in an end-of-the-year bike-give-away to one deserving student at each grade level. We began this school year by stocking the teacher breakroom.

For the new school year, R.J. Wilson has had to add over 100 students who previously attended another FWISD elementary school that has closed. Computer labs had to be turned into classrooms to accommodate the additional students. Maximizing space has become critical.

The school's principal has asked Rotary to purchase new chairs and tables for the school library. Funds for this purchase are not available from FWISD. According to the principal, "Given that the library is a common space used by all students in the school, it is necessary to provide the best experience possible when they go in there. The library is used for different purposes, in addition to classroom visits with collaborating teachers, the school library also serves as a learning space for students to do independent work, use computers, access the internet, use equipment and research materials; to host special events such as author visits and book clubs; and for tutoring and testing. This year we will also be hosting the GT (Gifted and Talented) program and the After-School program in the library, where having a flexible space will be necessary for students to be able to work in groups, pairs or individually to maximize their learning."

An attachment provided by the school provides more information and photos of the furniture being requested. An itemized quote is also provided.
