Summary: Provide internship funding for 4 high school students interested in research and wildlife-related career paths in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The Alaska Songbird Institute (ASI) provides high school internships to students interested in exploring research, wildlife, and conservation-related career paths. Students receive training in basic field research techniques, including nest monitoring, bird banding, and recording and managing data. Interns work alongside ASI biologists and others on the Swallow Ecology Project at Creamers Field in Fairbanks. They will monitor up to 70 active tree swallow nests, from egg laying and hatching through chick fledging. Interns who progress with their skills learn to take morphological measurements and band birds. Scholarships may also fund new internships at the Effie Kokrine School in Fairbanks, where students will be helping to lead a school-wide project bringing together western science and traditional knowledge about birds on their school campus. College Rotarians look forward to supporting Alaska's next generation of science and conservation leaders through these internships.
