Activity Type:
Community Development: General
Summary: 75 Solar lIghts distributed to 75 families in the NRT area of Kenya
Along with Watts of Love, RC of Goodyear PebbleCreek will distribute these lights to families identified as the most marginalized within their villages. THey include the very elderly who are not mobile, physically challenged/handicapped, and the poorest of the poor. We are very intentional in seeking out the most vulnerable people within the villages. In addition to receiving the light, these families receive training using a unique financial literacy curriculum, that instructs them how to save, invest, & build their futures. We train entire communities on how to use & take care of the light, provide education on the importance of compound savings while emphasizing the significance of redirecting funds previously used to purchase kerosene or other dangerous light sources. Each household receives a solar light to eliminate costly light alternatives. We help people identify their dreams, set goals, and take ownership of where to direct their savings (equip-train-empower). The light becomes an accelerator for raising themselves out of poverty. This program spills over into our Student of the Month project with Agua Fria High School District. Each chosen Student of the Month has a light given to a family in their name (written on the box that the light comes in) which doubles as the families piggy bank for saving their money.
