Total Budget: $2,600

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Community economic development, The environment

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: This project will provide mapping, enhanced signage, and continued trail maintenance and improvement projects on Near Island.

Near Island is home to a trail system of nine miles that is accessible from downtown Kodiak by foot, bike or vehicle.

The needs that will be addressed by this project have been identified in conjunction with trail users, the City of Kodiak (land owner) and Island Trails Network (ITN), our local trails advocacy organization. The project will meet trail users needs by providing 1. New Trailhead Signage, 2. Trail Route Mapping & Signage and 3. Trail Improvements. This project is part of a multi-tiered improvement program. Our specific project will focus on these three components for the "channel side" trail. The construction of this portion of the trail network was funded in large part by a grant from the Kodiak Rotary Club, supported with a district grant, 10 years ago. Specially, this portion of the trail system requires improvements due to erosion and signage degradation. This project can help provide an "Alaskan outdoor experience" for visitors and residents alike, without the costly expense of leaving town. Our goal is to foster positive mental and physical health through access to a quality, inclusive and safe space. This project meets several areas of Rotary focus. The timeline for project completion is this coming summer (2026). The project funds will be used primarily for labor and material costs. The summer work crew is made up of Kodiak High School athletes. Rotary members help on volunteer trail days to assist with and support trail construction efforts.
