Project Summary: The purpose of this project is to create toilet and hand washing facilities as part of a general rehabilitation and rebuilding of the Development Public School (DPS) in the village of Egbelu, Imo State, Nigeria.
Project Description:
Describe the project objectives:
The Development Public School (DPS), having fallen into disrepair from 7 years of disuse, is being rebuilt as a separate project. DPS has never had water, toilets or wash sinks - students and staff using the jungle. This grant would facilitate construction of a stand-alone building housing 4 toilets and sinks. Separate funding is being sought for the supporting well, tank and stand, plumbing and septic soak away.
Describe the benefit to the community and/or improve lives:
This project will primarily support the area of focus of Rotary International of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. The community health clinic reports having to treat typhoid and other water borne diseases frequently. Having toilets and sinks available will reduce the frequency of these diseases among the primary school population and allow teaching opportunities about hand washing and other hygiene measures. The DPS presently has 130 students from Egbelu and 4 adjacent villages. Each of the 5 villages has about 200 families, mostly subsistence farmers. This project, then, will impact several villages.
Sustainability:
Two ex-patriot brothers, alumni from the DPS, have spearheaded efforts to rebuild and renovate the school classrooms and buildings as the present buildings are in poor condition and one has fallen in. Their efforts have included creation of a village steering committee and a Parent Teacher Organization. The village elders are committed to this rehabilitation. A community survey also demonstrated support for this effort. A foundation has been created to assure the ability to pay teachers' salaries. A village young men's organization has committed to security needs for the school grounds. This Rotarian has met with many of the village leaders and teachers, as well as the ex-pat brothers and feels the commitment is genuine.
Active Rotarian Involvement:
The Greeley Centennial Rotary Club gave funds to have desks and benches built in 2025 as the school was reopening. This club also donated a device to detect glaucoma to the clinic in Egbelu. This Rotarian goes to the village at least yearly to manage the clinic.
The Rotary Club of Owerri, the capital city of Imo State, has stated willingness to take on funding for the borehole (well). One of their members, Kennedy Azuoma, is the manager of the village clinic and will be key in oversight and communication.
Total Project Budget: $10,000
$10,000 from the Greeley Centennial Rotary and the 5440 District, consisting of $5,000 club dollars with matching funds of $5,000 from our district.
Publicity Plan:
Greeley Centennial Rotary will write an article as the project progresses updating both the club membership and District 5440. It is intended that a delegation from District 5440 will travel to Egbelu in the Fall of 2026.
