Summary: High quality books mailed monthly to 580 at-risk 3 and 4 year old preschoolers in Loveland, Colorado
Thompson School District in Loveland, CO runs a network of 18 preschool classrooms. They serve mostly (85%) at-risk kids (language learners, low income or health issues). Dolly Parton's Imagination Library negotiates a low price of $3.50/book and mails age-appropriate books each month to kids under age 5 if there is a county sponsor. For Loveland it is United Way of Larimer County. Also the State of Colorado provides $1.75/book. This project provides funds for 580 kids x $1.75/book x 12 months = $12,180. Loveland Rotary Club Foundation is providing $4,800 for this project. So the remaining need is $7,380. We are requesting $3945 as a District Grant and will add $3935 in other Club funds. Total retail value of these books is about $49,000. The Literacy Committee of the Loveland RC discussed with United Way their need for funding the Imagination Library Project for Larimer County. We agreed that the appropriate role for our club would be for our club to raise funds for these 580 kids.
ROTARIAN INVOLVEMENT:
1) Attend Back-to-School nights at these classrooms to encourage parents to sign their children up for this program
2) At Farmer's Market and Art in the Park public events in Loveland, locate parents of preschoolers and hand out flyers to facilitate their signing up their kids.
