District Grant Final Report

District 5010

2020-21

Rotary Club: Ketchikan

Project Title: Kids Don't Float

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Rotary 2000 had the aim of giving its Kids Don't Float program a facelift and spreading awareness of said program with this grant. Our club took an inventory of each life jacket station in our community, cleaned/repaired any stations that were out of order, and created a list of life jacket sizes needed for each station if any jackets were missing. We worked with Alaska Department of Natural Resource to source and supply said life jackets. A marina in Ketchikan that was recently purchased by a new owner and undergoing its own face lift received a new bin for storing life jackets. As far as publicity goes, we worked with local radio stations to draft a PSA for the airwaves and contracted with North Creative Design to produce a beautiful video PSA that we are promoting on KPU Local Television and social media to promote and spread awareness about our program.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 1,000 +

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries of this project were the community of Ketchikan, specifically those who own boats and who have children. It's a huge deal for us to be able to provide "loaner" life jackets to individuals who may not have the money or resources to own their own, and in doing so we make boating safer not only for children but for their guardians and those owners/operators of marinas and boats.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 15-20

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Rotarians assisted with this project by inventorying the existing life jacket boxes, coordinating with DNR, working on draft PSA scripts, sourcing new life jackets and bins, and by promoting our work on social media. It was truly a group effort!

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

We worked with Alaska Department of Natural Resources to get new life jackets free of charge. We partnered with KRBD public radio to draft and broadcast radio PSA, and KPU Telecommunications is generously donating airspace for our video PSA.
