Rotary Club: El Centro Project Title: Backpack Weekend Project 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Imperial Valley Food Bank is the main provider/distributor in our area of food to families with food insecurity. The Food bank has a weekend backpack project in which school-age children are given a weekend backpack program filled with food items to be able to provide food for their family over the weekend. Each backpack is estimated to cost $180 a year to the FoodBank. 14 school-age students and their families were funded for a total of $2520. family of 4 is funded for $300 per month. 14 school-age children from the City of El Centro and their families were adopted, so that a backpack would provided every weekend for 12 months. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 56 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Due to confidentiality issues, the name of the school-age children or their families was not provided, only that they are students enrolled in a school in the City of El Centro, and the students and/or families are registered with the IV Foodbank as meeting their income and/or need guidelines, has a minimum of 4 members in the family and they are resident of the City of El Centro. This project will guarantee that these students and their families would be assured of the backpacks coming to them for at least 12 months. Each family has at least 4 members, so it is estimated that at least 56 people would benefit. The humanitarian need that was met was to be able to overcome food insecurity for 12 months. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 32 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Our club applied for 3 matching grants and they were approved. Since we have only met via zoom, it was the decision of the board of directors to mail an appeal to our members. The response was fantastic and we were able to fund all three grants and then some. The mailer included a card, a poem, vegetable seeds and a letter from our president. Under normal circumstances, we would have made it a Rotarians at Work day, either helping the IV Food Bank deliver boxes, fill boxes or fill backpacks. Due to COVID-19, it was decided that for our members’ safety, it would be postponed. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Imperial Valley Food Bank was the recipient nonprofit organization. Their role as recipient, administrators and distributors, first of the funds, and then of the food is invaluable. 7. Income
