Rotary Club: Borrego Springs Project Title: Job Skills for High Schoolers 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Eighteen of our Borrego Springs High School students participated in a NAI (National Association of Interpreters) Class for the 20-21 school year. We are the only high school in the US to offer this NAI class. Through speakers, field trips, projects, readings and exams, all students received two certificates: Certificate of Interpretive Host (CIH) and Certificate of Interpretive Guide (CIG). The class was mostly via distance learning and as soon as restrictions permitted, we went on local field trips to our Anza Borrego Desert State Park as well as businesses in Borrego Springs. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 18 (one student of the original 19 dropped out due to medical reasons after materials were purchased.) 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Our high school is 95% English Language Learners and all receive free meals (Title 1). Although we are located in the middle of the largest state park in the nation (Anza Borrego Desert State Park) our students have very little knowledge of the park and why folks come here from all over the world. They also miss out on multiple employment opportunities. The goal is for them to perhaps pursue a career in the park services. Currently these certificates are opening doors for some summer employment as these students have gained much in self-confidence and knowledge of their community which can be shared with tourists in restaurants, golf courses and hotels. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 3 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. They studied the history of parks and the art of interpreting the "place", the event, the history in an engaging manner. They learned about their own Anza Borrego Desert State Park - including field trips. They learned how to meet the needs of their audiences with speaking strategies, reading the visitors' needs, asking questions, presenting their information in a provocative manner. They learned how to use these same people skills while working in hospitality which in Borrego Springs is a large employer. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Many organizations partnered with us for speakers, interpretive modeling and field trips: Anza Borrego Foundation Anza Borrego Desert State Park Ocotillo Wells State Recreational Vehicle Park La Casa Del Zorro Resort Ram's Hill Gold Course Anza Borrego Natural History Association 7.
