Rotary Club: Kenai River-Soldotna Project Title: Soldotna Food Pantry 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Financial assistance from the project help with the purchase of food, garden seeds, and supplies. Rotarians provided volunteer labor during the growing season (May - Sep 2021) on-site at the Soldotna United Methodist Church (SUMC), including garden prep and planting, weeding, assembly of food boxes, and harvesting of vegetables. 2. How many people benefited from this project? Average of 56 individuals per week served during the time covered. Clients were eligible to receive a food box once every 4 weeks, so different people were served from week to week. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Beneficiaries were people expeiencing food insecurity in the local community. The Food Pantry does not set income limits for eligibility, as anyone can find themselves food insecure on occasion. Church membership is not a requirement. The humanitarian need and impact of the project was to provide food assistance to those in need. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Nine overall, with varying numbers for individual work opportunities over the course of the project.. 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Rotarians assisted with planting the garden on the grounds of SUMC, assembly of food boxes distributed to clients, and harvesting food from the garden (photos attached of Rotarians harvesting potatoes) 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? The Soldotna Food Pantry is a partnership between SUMC and Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna. Support for the Food Pantry comes from community donations, and members of both churches support the food pantry financially and provide vounteer support by tending to the garden, as well as assembling and distrubuting food boxes, The Food Pantry also works with the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank (KPFB) on a regular basis to help feed clients of the Food Pantry. KPFB supports SUMC Food Pantry by providing low cost food (at 19 cents per pound) to help get food to those in need. 7. Income
