Rotary Club: Solana Beach Project Title: ECOLIFE Aquaponics III 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? With continued difficulties with severe food insecurity for many local residents, due to pandemic related issues, we maintained the program of the previous year to be one of humanitarian food assistance. With funding from the Solana Beach ECO-Rotary, ECOLIFE was able to purchase supplies needed to operate our Aquaponic Innovation Center - a 900 square foot aquaponic system used to grow and donate roughly 3,000 pounds of produce to those in need throughout San Diego. Such supplies included: Seeds, soluble plant supplements and nutrients, pH manipulators, and various materials for natural pest control. No money was spent on labor. 2. How many people benefited from this project? Roughly 2,000 meals to 400 -1,000 individuals 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Our unique collaborations with the aforementioned organizations allowed Eco Life's impact to reach a diverse group of beneficiaries. The monthly recipients of produce from our Aquaponics Innovation Center include: seniors, veterans, youth, people experiencing homelessness, and individuals suffering from mental health issues. The majority of people benefiting from Eco Life's produce donations are considered part of an AFN (Access and Functional Needs) population. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 0 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? ECOLIFE collaborated with organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Produce for Patriots, Wounded Warrior Homes, Interfaith Community Services, and Salvation Army Escondido Corps to ensure that the produce we grow was distributed to a wide range of San Diego’s most in-need community members. The majority of the produce grown with support from Solana Beach ECO-Rotary went to Salvation Army Escondido who serve approximately 215 people per week and Interfaith Community Services who serve 150 people each day. Each organization gives away a portion of meals on a first-come-first-served basis while maintaining regularly scheduled services for designated senior living and family-focused programs. 7. Income
