District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2021-22

Rotary Club: Chula Vista Sunrise

Project Title: Promoting Sustainability

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

South Bay Sustainable Communities (SBSC) works to build healthy and sustainable communities by encouraging them to create lasting change in their daily lives through education and community engagement in environmental conservation, neighborhood composting, and sustainable urban farming. SBSC sponsors multiple events monthly to train students and community members in composting and sustainability. They also host monthly beach and bay clean up events.

2. How many people benefited from this project? over 400 individuals

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries are all of the beach and bay-going residents of Chula Vista. The main goal of the clean up events was to remove trash and debris from the local bay, harbor and estuary region. This site is a sea and shorebird nesting area, a grazing site for Eastern Pacific green sea turtles, and a breeding site for native fish, rays and sharks. Because of that, clean up events help to protect and safeguard habitats and biodiversity.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 18

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Chula Vista Rotarians joined the California Coastal Clean Up on September 18 and the Beautify Chula Vista event on October 23 to remove trash from the Chula Vista Harbor and Bayfront area. Over 5,860 lbs of trash were removed during the two events.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The City of Chula Vista Environmental Services department helped to provide buckets and biodegradable bags for the clean up events.
