Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Mozambique

Location: Gorongosa

Total Budget: $42,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

This Global Grant will improve the health care of the communities surrounding Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park by extending the reach of existing medical services to the remote communities surrounding the park. (Note - The communities around the perimeter of Gorongosa National Park are referred to in this grant proposal as the Park Buffer Zone abbreviated as PBZ). Medical services are situated in the Community Education Center adjacent to the National Park Headquarters located in Chitengo 18 58' 18'N 34 21' 44'E). Approximately 120 staff members are based in Chitengo.

Although health services have improved markedly in the past 20 years, health services are still lacking within the dozens of remote communities, some of which lie up to 140 miles from Chitengo along unimproved roads making access by two wheel drive low clearance vehicles impractical and in some cases impossible. The poor road situation is made worse by the seasonal flooding during the wet season (November - March) making access to even close in communities a challenge. This grant will fund the purchase of a 4x4 high clearance vehicle which will make it possible to get routine medical services to the less accessible areas surrounding Gorongosa Park.

The timeline is to raise enough funds in the 2015/2016 Rotary Year to purchase this vehicle. Estimated cost is $42,000.

DDF contributions in grey are pending approval of the corresponding district committee.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
