Project Description Region: Africa Country: South Africa Location: Howick Total Budget: $61,875 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy The need is to help the very low grade 12 pass rate of learners particularly in rural schools in the target area where pass rates of 40% are common. The needs were identified by meetings with the principals and teachers of the 11 target schools and also the Department of Education Circuit Managers. A pilot project in one school using digital video lessons displayed through LED TV sets was encouraging because in the first year, the pass rate moved from 40% to 70%.
